CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

A brutal triple murder shakes the city.

I stare at the newspaper Dad holds in the air and frown at the headline. From the corner of my eye, I can see Tiger and Bear share a glance, but both of their faces are unreadable. They think they can fucking fool me.

Goddamned, I want to smack them both in the head.

"It's Camille Crusador and her two guards," Dad states, jaw tight. "I talked with my resources, and the guards were only shot, but there wasn't even one bullet in her." His piercing gaze turns to Bear, voice cold as ice. "Any guesses on how she died?"

Bear doesn't even flinch under pressure, hiding his secrets like a pro. "Alone?"

Falcon presses her fist against her mouth, her petite shoulders shaking slightly, trying not to laugh.

I don't feel like laughing.

Instead, my hands curl into fists, and I fold my arms over my chest, hiding the visible mark of anger from Dad.

"You think this is funny?" he growls, the tendons on his neck tight. "You're supposed to be organized. The fucking Beasts of Prey." He stands up behind his desk, fists planted against the wooden surface as he stares at Bear, eyes plated with rage. "No one goes rogue, no matter what the situation is, and I specifically told you not to touch her. It was Wolf's job to bring her in, and you just messed it all up."

Bear's nostrils flare as if he tries to control himself from jumping up from the armchair he's on. "I didn't do shit."

"Don't you dare lie to me," Dad snaps, grabbing a photo from the table where it had been upside down, holding it in the air for him to see. We all see it.

I scrub my cheeks, my stomach turning to knots from looking at the crime scene photo. Not because of the bloody, broken body in it. It's because I know what weapon leaves bodies like that behind.

Bear glances at the photo, expression unwavering.

"Someone beat her to death with a baseball bat." Dad slams the photo back to the table, angrier I've seen him in a long time. "And that someone is you."

Bear is up from the chair in a blink of an eye, turning everyone on high alert as he storms to Dad, and my blood runs cold as I watch them staring at each other chest to chest. The air in the room is too thick to breathe, and I feel Tiger wiring up beside me.

I want to drag him out of the room and get the truth out of him about what the hell had happened.

"I said I didn't fucking do it," Bear says, voice low and body rigid.

"Oh, really? Tell me where you were last night," Dad questions, crossing his hands behind his back and leaning closer, basically oozing superiority. "Prove me wrong."

I swear no one in this office is breathing, and my heart thunders in my chest loud enough for me to hear it. Probably Tiger and Puma beside me can hear it too.
